Project Sundarbans

The inhabitants live on rice and vegetables in mud huts
The nursery is housed in the Rainbow School. Complete with a solar energy system and 2 PCs, it is also the area’s computer centre
Mohidosh, Panchali and Biprajit are already learning to read and write in Bengali and English

Xavier Raj Arul who runs our project in Kolkata has also set-up a school project in the Sundarbans.

The Sundarbans are a part of the world's largest delta formed by the mighty rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Situated on the lower end of West Bengal, it is also the world’s largest estuarine forest. It is one of the most attractive and alluring places remaining on earth, however at least 60% of the population lives below the poverty line. Here there is virtually no infra-structure, transport systems are  non-existent or at best poor, there is no electricity or medical care – mothers often die during childbirth and minor infections often lead to death and virtually no education – 50% of the population are illiterate and innumerate.

In 1998, Xavier Raj started a small school project in the Sundarbans. With the support of Zukunft für Kinder – ZUKI, the Sundarbans Primary School in the meantime comprises three school buildings in three villages providing some 340 children with an education.
All children live with their families, but without our support would not have the opportunity of an education or medical care. The danger is that children without an education are still regularly sold as cheap labour or for prostitution in the cities.
In 2004, an infirmary, practising homeopathy, was established in one of the school buildings.

A sponsorship of 18 Euros per month enables a child to go to school, receive a warm, healthy meal each day and receive medical care. 350 children have to date found a sponsor. As in the project in Kolkata, the funds generated by the sponsorships are distributed equally among the 520 children; each additional sponsorship helps us to maintain and raise the standard of care and to support the local community with medication, school materials and teachers.

Please help and start a sponsorship!
